IAEA Overview

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an international forum that aims to promote global technical and scientific cooperation for the conscious use of nuclear technologies, thus ensuring safety and sustainability around the world. Its goal is to avoid the use of such resources for purposes that endanger global security and peace. Headquartered in Vienna (Austria), the IAEA has approximately 2,300 employees and is structured in six departments: Nuclear Safety and Security, Nuclear Sciences and Applications, Nuclear Energy, Technical Cooperation, Management and Safeguards.

IAEA’s main focus: Promoting the sustainable use of nuclear technologies to ensure global peace and security.

IAEA Selection Processes

The IAEA offers 3 main ways of working for the agency. These are:

Regular Vacancies

Through the agency’s Job Search portal, candidates can find the current vacancies available and apply for a position at the organization. Vacancies are commonly offered for the agency’s headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

 

IAEA Pipelines

The IAEA constantly engages consultants and experts under individual arrangements to work on limited projects. Description of the IAEA Internship Programme

What are the fields of study required for the IAEA Internship?

This internship program includes students and recent graduates from the most diverse fields of knowledge. The areas of study with the highest demand in this program are:

  • Natural Sciences and Mathematics
  • Social Sciences/Humanities
  • Engineering
  • Information Technology
  • Administration and Management

What are the tasks performed by the selected for the IAEA Internship?

The activities performed vary according to the opening and the requirements of the different departments to which interns are allocated. However, generally speaking, the main duties are:

  • Support administrative and operational activities;
  • Carry out research and collect and analyze data on topics relevant to the agency’s work;
  • Draft and review reports and other types of documents;
  • Take part in training sessions and events with other agency members;
  • Prepare presentations using conventional software.

What is the duration of the IAEA Internship?

Normally, the internship period ranges from at least 3 months to up to 12 months at most. However, a minimum of one month is also accepted.

What is the weekly workload of the IAEA Internship?

The internship programs are full-time. Interns shall therefore work between 35 and 40 hours per week.

Where are the locations of the IAEA Internship?

Most openings are for the organization’s headquarters in Vienna (Austria), but opportunities may be available for its Liaison and Regional Offices around the world:

Liaision Offices: Toronto (Canada) and Tokyo (Japan)

Regional Offices: New York (USA) and Geneva (Switzerland)

 When does the IAEA Internship start?

The initial date of the internship shall be coordinated between the intern and the organization.

Feedback following the IAEA internship:

At the end of the internship, the supervisor is in charge of preparing an assessment report of the intern’s performance.

Subsequent employment:

Participation in the internship is not related to future employment with the agency. During the internship period and within six months immediately after the program, you will not be eligible to apply for or be appointed to any effective position in the organization. However, the work experience in the agency will be a distinctive feature in your curriculum, which may facilitate your hiring by other organizations inside or outside the UN System.

Location: Vienna, Austria (IAEA Headquarters)

Duration in Months: 36

Contract Type: Fixed Term – Regular

Probation Period: 1 Year

Core Competencies required: Planning and Organizing, Communication, Achieving Results, Teamwork

Functional Competencies required: Analytical thinking, Client orientation, Judgement/decision making, Knowledge sharing and learning, Resilience

Required Expertises:

Proficiency in MS Office and the ability to use databases;

Ability to provide training and guidance to newly recruited office support staff, advising them on the administrative practices and procedures;

Ability to draft routine correspondence and correct documents in accordance with established standards and requirements.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills required:

  • Completed secondary education.
  • Minimum of four years of general office support experience, some of which in an international environment.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
  • English language test (level 2) to IAEA standard.

IAEA Jobs - Salary and Benefits

Salary

Salaries at the IAEA are determined within the framework of the UN Common System and are paid in the currency of the country where the duty station is.

There’s also the post adjustment, which is an amount paid in addition to the net base salary, which varies according to the cost of living at each duty station in comparison to New York (the base of the United Nations remuneration system).

The base salary and the post adjustment are, together, the net remuneration of the IAEA.

Relocation

The IAEA generally meets the costs of travel from the place of recruitment to the duty station in the case of new, internationally recruited staff members and their eligible dependents. Assistance with visa formalities may also be provided. Upon arrival, staff members of the IAEA recruited from outside the duty station and appointed for at least one year receive a settling-in grant for covering initial expenses.

Health insurance

Medical insurance coverage is a scheme covering medical and hospital expenses. Generally, staff members and their eligible dependents are enrolled on a cost-sharing basis in IAEA’s health insurance scheme.

In some special cases, approval may be granted to continue participation in health insurance schemes other than IAEA’s one.

Life insurance

Staff members of the IAEA have the possibility of enrolling, at their own expense, in a group life insurance scheme with many levels of coverage.

Pension plan

The United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF) is a fund established by the General Assembly of the United Nations to provide retirement, death, disability, and related benefits for the staff of the United Nations and other member organizations admitted to membership in the fund.

Staff members of the IAEA are required to participate in the UNJSPF, for which they contribute 7.9% and the Agency contributes 15.8% of their pensionable remuneration. Staff members leaving the Agency before completion of five years of contributory service will be reimbursed the amount of their own contributions plus 3.25% interest.

After the completion of 5 years, staff members would be eligible for a deferred retirement benefit, early retirement benefit or normal retirement benefit depending on their age upon separation.

Staff members of the IAEA may exceptionally be authorized to continue to participate in a national pension insurance scheme or the pension scheme of their former employer.
