The goal of the IAEA Internship Programme is to provide interns with practical knowledge about the IAEA’s work and main mission. Selected applicants will therefore have the opportunity to gain practical experience in their area of study and interest, while contributing to the development of the organization’s activities.

IAEA Overview

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an international forum that aims to promote global technical and scientific cooperation for the conscious use of nuclear technologies, thus ensuring safety and sustainability around the world. Its goal is to avoid the use of such resources for purposes that endanger global security and peace. Headquartered in Vienna (Austria), the IAEA has approximately 2,300 employees and is structured in six departments: Nuclear Safety and Security, Nuclear Sciences and Applications, Nuclear Energy, Technical Cooperation, Management and Safeguards.

IAEA’s main focus: Promoting the sustainable use of nuclear technologies to ensure global peace and security.

Description of the IAEA Internship Programme

What are the fields of study required for the IAEA Internship?

This internship program includes students and recent graduates from the most diverse fields of knowledge. The areas of study with the highest demand in this program are:

  • Natural Sciences and Mathematics
  • Social Sciences/Humanities
  • Engineering
  • Information Technology
  • Administration and Management

What are the tasks performed by the selected for the IAEA Internship?

The activities performed vary according to the opening and the requirements of the different departments to which interns are allocated. However, generally speaking, the main duties are:

  • Support administrative and operational activities;
  • Carry out research and collect and analyze data on topics relevant to the agency’s work;
  • Draft and review reports and other types of documents;
  • Take part in training sessions and events with other agency members;
  • Prepare presentations using conventional software.

What is the duration of the IAEA Internship?

Normally, the internship period ranges from at least 3 months to up to 12 months at most. However, a minimum of one month is also accepted.

What is the weekly workload of the IAEA Internship?

The internship programs are full-time. Interns shall therefore work between 35 and 40 hours per week.

Where are the locations of the IAEA Internship?

Most openings are for the organization’s headquarters in Vienna (Austria), but opportunities may be available for its Liaison and Regional Offices around the world:

Liaision Offices: Toronto (Canada) and Tokyo (Japan)

Regional Offices: New York (USA) and Geneva (Switzerland)

 When does the IAEA Internship start?

The initial date of the internship shall be coordinated between the intern and the organization.

Feedback following the IAEA internship:

At the end of the internship, the supervisor is in charge of preparing an assessment report of the intern’s performance.

Subsequent employment:

Participation in the internship is not related to future employment with the agency. During the internship period and within six months immediately after the program, you will not be eligible to apply for or be appointed to any effective position in the organization. However, the work experience in the agency will be a distinctive feature in your curriculum, which may facilitate your hiring by other organizations inside or outside the UN System.

IAEA Internship Stipend/Salary

The IAEA offers a monthly stipend of 500 euros to help the subsistence of interns with no financial support from other institutions. Selected applicants are also offered an additional 500 euros as housing allowance.

What is the education requirement of the IAEA Internship Program?

  • Have completed at least three years of an undergraduate school program (Bachelor’s level or equivalent), or;
  • Have graduated from an undergraduate or graduate course in the last 12 months.

What is the language requirement of the IAEA Internship Program?

Applicants must be fluent in English (oral and written). Working knowledge of another official IAEA language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) may be an asset in the selection process.

Whats is the Age Limit of the IAEA Internship?

Applicants must be at least 20 years old at the time of enrolment.

What is the Nationality requirement of the IAEA Internship Program?

Applicants must be a citizen of a IAEA member state.

What are the competencies required for the IAEA Internship Program?

The main competencies required are:

  • Experience in compiling and processing information in databases;
  • Writing and communication skills;
  • Knowledge of conventional software (Word, Excel, Prezi, etc.);
  • Skills in analyzing data and preparing presentations;
  • Knowledge of software such as Trados Studio (opening for translators);
  • Interns should be able to adapt to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment.

Other requirements of the IAEA Internship Programme:

Most internships require no work experience. However, previous experiences may be an advantage in the selection process.

What are the Restrictions of the IAEA Internship Program?

  • An applicant may not be a child or sibling of any organization staff member.
  • Applicants must not have previously participated in the Agency’s internship programme.

IAEA Internship Application Process

When to apply for the IAEA internship?

Application deadlines vary depending on the openings and the needs of organization. Therefore, it is important search for internship opportunities through information on our website and social networking platforms.

 How to apply for the IAEA Internship?

The internship application process is done via the IAEA E-recruitment System, where all openings are published, and comprises the following steps:

  1. Initial registration;
  2. Filling out the candidate profile (academic and professional background);
  3. Search for an opening in your field of interest;
  4. Filling out the application form;
  5. You must also include two signed letters of recommendation (electronic signatures are not acceptable);
  6. Submit the application.

What are the phases of the selection process for the IAEA Internship?

The selection process may vary depending on the department or office to which the intern is applying, but generally comprises the following steps:

  1. Creating a profile and preparing an application;
  2. Submitting the application;
  3. Evaluation of the application;
  4. Competency-based interview;
  5. Selection notifications.

How is the IAEA Internship Interview?

Usually, only selected applicants will be contacted for the interview, which lasts about 30 minutes and may be done via Skype or phone. The main points covered in the interview vary according to the opening and department chosen. In general, however, the questions address subjective or behavioral aspects, such as your expectations about the job, your interests in the area of expertise you are applying for and your previous experiences.

What are the documents to submit for the IAEA Internship?                                                                         

  • Two Letters of Recommendation must be submitted, duly signed (electronic signatures are not accepted);
  • Personal History Form.

What is the evaluation criteria of the IAEA Internship?

You will be evaluated regarding your previous experience, skills and competencies, and educational background.

IAEA Internship Costs

The organization only offers financial aid to cover costs related to accommodation for the internship. However, you may request financial aid from a sponsoring institution, for example, a university and/or government agency in your country.

Visa:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for the costs and arrangements of obtaining the visa (if needed to do the internship).

Insurance:

The IAEA offers health insurance for interns with no insurance coverage.

Accommodation:

The IAEA offers interns housing allowance of up to 500 euros.

Other:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for the costs and arrangements of the trip to the workplace to which you have been assigned.
