Gavi Overview

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance is an international organization that seeks to promote the vaccination of children in poor regions of the world. Headquartered in Geneva (Switzerland), Gavi fights for vaccines to be cheaper, accessible and to reach more poor children. The agency also tries to give children access to new vaccines and other means of disease prevention. To achieve its purposes, Gavi works in partnership with other IGOs, States, the private sector and the vaccine industry. By 2020, the agency plans to provide vaccines for 300 million children.

Gavi’s main focus: Encouraging vaccination of children in low-income countries to promote health and equal access to resources.

This internship program includes students and recent graduates from the most diverse fields of knowledge. The areas of study with the highest demand in this program are:

What are the tasks performed by the selected for the Gavi Internship?

Tasks vary for each available slot. However, they follow the most common activities:

  • Draft and revise documents, reports, etc;
  • Provide administrative support;
  • Take part in meetings, trainings and events with other members of the agency;
  • Prepare presentations;
  • Contribute to ongoing projects;
  • Perform other activities when required.

What is the duration of the Gavi Internship?

The duration of the internships varies between 6 to 20 weeks, at most.

What is the weekly workload of the Gavi Internship?

Interns are expected to work full-time. The working hours are normally from 9am to 6pm in Geneva and 8am to 5pm in Washington, with an one-hour lunch break included.

Where are the locations of the Gavi Internship?

Vacancies are spread between the Geneva (Switzerland) and Washington, DC (USA) units.

When does the Gavi Internship start?

The initial date of the internship shall be coordinated between the intern and the organization.

Is there any feedback following the completion of the Gavi Internship?

All interns and their supervisors are asked to complete an evaluation form at the end of the program.

Subsequent employment:

Participation in the internship is not related to future employment with the agency. However, the work experience in the agency will be a distinctive feature in your curriculum, which may facilitate your hiring by the organization in case you apply for a full-time job at Gavi.

Gavi may offer some assistance to interns who do not have financial support. However, the amount covers only basic costs such as local transportation and lunch expenses.

An applicant may not be a child or sibling of any organization staff member, nor may have participated in a previous Gavi internship.

There is no specific application deadline for the internship, since vacancies arise throughout the year and have their particularities. The application process is done through Gavi’s recruitment website, where all openings are published.

How to apply for the Gavi Internship Program?

The application process for internship vacancies is conducted through Gavi’s E-recruitment System, where all vacancies are published.

  1. Search the vacancy by area of interest on Gavi’s website;
  2. Register a profile in Gavi’s website;
  3. Submit your application.

What are the phases of the selection process for the Gavi Internship Program?

The selection process may vary depending on the department or office to which the intern is applying, but generally comprises the following steps:

How is the Gavi Internship Program interview?

Usually, only selected applicants will be contacted for the interview, which lasts about 30 minutes and may be done via Skype or phone. Gavi Alliance Internship - Costs

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for the costs and arrangements of obtaining the visa needed to do the internship.

Insurance:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for the costs incurred from potential accidents and/or illnesses occurred during the internship, and must present a medical insurance valid for the region where the agency operates.

Accommodation:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for accommodation expenses during the internship period.

Other:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for the costs and arrangements of the trip to the workplace to which you have been assigned.
