The goal of the EBRD Internship Program is to provide those interested in international development with a greater understanding of the work of EBRD and its investment operations in the private sector. There is also the opportunity for participants to be supervised by more experienced professionals, where they can develop a network and receive continuous feedback.

EBRD Overview

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) aims to promote growth and economic innovation in countries that are in transition to market economies. Its main partners are commercial banks, enterprises and the industrial sector, which receive financing for projects and venture capital loans. In addition, EBRD also offers consulting services to its customers. More than 36 economies benefit from EBRD services in Europe, Asia and the Mediterranean, which encompass a diversity of private sector actors.

Description of the EBRD Internship

What are the fields of study required for the EBRD Internship?

This internship program includes students and recent graduates from the most diverse fields of knowledge. The areas of study with the highest demand in this program are:

  • Economics
  • Banking and Finance

  • Sciences
  • Other related fields

What are the tasks performed by the selected for the EBRD Internship?

  • Contributing to development projects;
  • Financial analysis;
  • Research for banking teams in sectors and companies;
  • Researching and preparing reports on economic developments in our countries of operations;
  • Developing and maintaining databases.

What is the duration of the EBRD Internship?

The duration of the internship varies between 3 to 6 months. Depending on the unit’s need, the internship period may be extended to a total of 12 months.

What is the weekly workload of the EBRD Internship?

Those selected usually work on a full-time basis (up to 40 hours per week).

Where are the locations of the EBRD Internship?

Opportunities are spread between EBRD Headquarters in London (UK) and its Regional and Country Offices around the world.

When does the EBRD Internship start?

The initial date of the internship shall be coordinated between the intern and the organization.

Is there any feedback following the completion of the EBRD Internship?

At the end of the internship, the supervisor is in charge of preparing an assessment report of the intern’s performance.

Subsequent employment:

Participation in the internship is not related to future employment with the Bank. However, the work experience will be a distinctive feature in your curriculum, which may facilitate your hiring by EBRD and other IGOs.

EBRD Internship - Salary

EBRD offers interns a monthly stipend ranging from 1000 to 2000 euros. The amount will depend on the training and experience of each participant.

What is the education requirement of the EBRD Internship Program?

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school program (Master’s or PhD), or;
  • Have graduated from an undergraduate or graduate course in the last 12 months.

What is the language requirement of the EBRD Internship Program?

Proficiency in English is required (written and spoken). Knowledge of another relevant language may be an advantage in the selection process.

What is the age requirement of the EBRD Internship Program?

Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of enrollment.

What is the nationality requirement of the EBRD Internship Program?

Applicants must be citizens of an EBRD member state.

What are the competencies required for the EBRD Internship Program?

The main competencies required are:

  • Excellent presentation, research and report writing skills;
  • Familiarity with the EBRD region of operations and work or study experience in the region is helpful;
  • Ability to plan and organize work with little supervision, ability to multitask and meet tight deadlines;
  • Ability to operate in a multicultural environment and build effective working relationships;
  • Ability to tackle problems in a logical way, with good organizational skills, a keen eye for detail and the goal of attaining the highest possible accuracy and quality within their work;
  • Prior work experience of policy-oriented, related consultancy services or international financial institutions would be an advantage;
  • High customer orientation and strong communication, negotiation and marketing skills;
  • Good knowledge of trade finance instruments.

What are the restrictions of the EBRD Internship Program?

Interns are not considered permanent employees of EBRD and, therefore, are not entitled to the same benefits.

When to apply for the EBRD Internship Program?

Internship opportunities are announced throughout the year, according to the needs of the EBRD units.

How to apply for the EBRD Internship Program?

  • Search for possible vacancies by area of interest on the EBRD’s Job Website;
  • When you find the vacancy you want, click on “Apply now”. Registration in the EBRD System will be required;
  • Fill in the form with your personal and professional information;;
  • Submit your application.

What are the phases of the selection process for the EBRD Internship Program?

The selection process may vary depending on the department or office to which the intern is applying, but generally comprises the following steps:

  1. Submitting the application;
  2. Evaluation of the application;
  3. Competency-based interview;
  4. Selection notifications.

How is the EBRD Internship Program interview?

Usually, only selected applicants will be contacted for the interview, which lasts about 30 minutes and may be done via Skype or phone. The main points covered in the interview vary according to the opening and department chosen. In general, however, the questions address subjective or behavioral aspects, such as your expectations about the job, your interests in the area of expertise you are applying for and your previous experiences.

You will be evaluated regarding your previous experiences and skills, as well as your educational background.

EBRD Internship - Costs

Visa:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for the costs and arrangements related to obtaining the visa required for the internship at EBRD. However, the Bank may provide support in obtaining the visa to those selected.

Insurance:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for the costs resulting from accidents and/or illnesses incurred during the internship and you must present medical insurance valid for the region where the agency operates.

Accommodation:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for the expenses related to the necessary accommodation throughout the internship period, and you must use the remuneration granted by EBRD for your subsistence.

Other:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for the costs and arrangements of the trip to the workplace to which you have been assigned.
