The goal of the International Computing Centre Internship Program is to allow candidates to acquire practical experience in topics related to information and communications technology (ICT), promoting the exchange of experiences and networking in a multicultural and international environment.

 

In pursuit of its mission, the OpenIGO network has prepared a comprehensive eBook and support and guidance services, with the aim of highly increasing your chances of success in these competitive processes. ICC Overview

The International Computing Centre (ICC) is an international organization that occupies a prominent position in providing information and communications technology (ICT) services to UN entities, funds and programs, as well as other organizations. Headquartered in Geneva (Switzerland), the ICC seeks to make ICT services within the United Nations more effective, helping UN to achieve its goals for global development. ICC shares the same values of the UN System, seeking to act in a transparent manner, focusing on its customers and respecting cultural diversity.

ICC’s main focus: Providing efficient and reliable information and communications technology services.

What are the tasks performed by the selected for the ICC Internship?

The activities performed vary according to the opening and the requirements of the different departments to which interns are allocated. However, generally speaking, the main duties are:

  • Draft and revise documents, reports, etc;
  • Provide administrative support;
  • Take part in training, meetings and events with other members of the organization;
  • Help in database management;
  • Prepare presentations;
  • Contribute to ongoing projects;
  • Perform other activities when required.

What is the duration of the ICC Internship?

The internship period ranges from at least 3 months to up to 6 months at most.

What is the weekly workload of the ICC Internship?

Interns usually work full-time (40 hours per week).

Where are the locations of the ICC Internship?

Vacancies are distributed between the Geneva (Switzerland) unit and the other ICC units located at:

  • New York (USA);
  • Valencia (Spain);
  • Rome (Italy);
  • Brindisi (Italy).

When does the ICC Internship start?

The initial date of the internship shall be coordinated between the intern and the organization.

Is there any feedback following the completion of the ICC Internship?

The supervisor, at the end of the internship period, will prepare an assessment of the intern’s time at ICC and provide constructive feedback on his performance at the organization.

Subsequent employment:

Participation in the internship is not related to future employment with the agency. However, the work experience in the agency will be a distinctive feature in your curriculum, which may facilitate your hiring by organizations inside or outside the UN System.

International Computing Centre Internship - Salary

ICC usually offers a monthly stipend to those selected of 400 euros per month and 1550 Swiss francs for internships in Geneva, Switzerland.

What is the education requirement of the ICC Internship Program?

Education requirements vary with each vacancy. In general, the candidate must:

  • Be enrolled in the last school year of an undergraduate school program (Bachelor’s level or equivalent) in the field required for that specific opening, or;
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school program (Masters), or;
  • Have graduated from an undergraduate or graduate course in the last 12 months.

What is the language requirement of the ICC Internship Program?

Proficiency in English or French is required. Knowledge of another language in the UN System (Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish) may be an advantage in the selection process.

What is the age requirement of the ICC Internship Program?

Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of enrollment.

What is the nationality requirement of the ICC Internship Program?

Applicants must be citizens of a UN member state.

What are the competencies required for the ICC Internship Program?

Competencies vary according to the vacancy’s needs. The main ones required are:

Communication: 

– Speaks and writes clearly and effectively.

– Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others, or asks questions to clarify, and responds appropriately.

∙ Teamwork:

– Solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others.

– Places team agenda before personal agenda.

∙ Planning & Organizing: 

– Allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work.

– Monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary – Uses time efficiently.

Other requirements:

  • Ability to use Microsoft office applications (Word, Excel);
  • Good written and oral communications skills with ability to prepare technical documentation;
  • Excellent interactive and interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a multicultural environment.

What are the restrictions of the ICC Internship Program?

An applicant may not be a child or sibling of any organization staff member.

International Computing Centre Internship - Application process

When to apply for the ICC Internship Program?

Vacancies open throughout the year, according to the needs of the ICC units, and the application deadline varies for each specific vacancy. All vacancies are posted on the ICC internship website.

How to apply for the ICC Internship Program?

To apply, interested parties should send an e-mail to personnel@unicc.org, specifying the internship (example: ‘ICC/17/BSI/i007 ‐ Applications Support Unit’) in the subject line. The e-mail must contain information about your background, interests and experiences.

What are the phases of the selection process for the ICC Internship Program?

  1. Submit your application via e-mail;
  2. Evaluation of the application;
  3. Competency-based interview;
  4. Selection notifications.

How is the ICC Internship Program interview?

Selected candidates will be contacted for interviews, where information about their background, experience and knowledge in the desired area will be checked. After the interview, the final decision on the candidate’s admission will be made.

What are the documents to submit for the ICC Internship Program?

  • One-page summary of your education, interests and any relevant experience indicating the reference number of the internship vacancy. Unsolicited applications will not be answered by the organization.

What is the evaluation criteria of the ICC Internship Program?

You will be evaluated regarding your previous experiences and skills, as well as your educational background.

 

International Computing Centre Internship - Costs

Visa:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for the costs and arrangements of obtaining the visa (if needed to do the internship).

Insurance:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for the costs of enrolling in a valid global medical insurance plan, which must included coverage of accidents and illnesses that may occur during the internship.

Accommodation:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for accommodation expenses during the internship period. The stipend that ICC provides should be used for your living costs.

Other:

You or your sponsoring institution will be responsible for the costs and arrangements of the trip to the workplace to which you have been assigned.
